Prince Arima, a prince of Emperor Kotoku, was accused of rebellion and was deposed. He was tied a pine tree in Iwashiro.
He contributed to the Manyoshu (8th century anthology of Japanese poetry) and prayed to the god of Iwashiro for peace. The land of Iwashiro later became a famous place on the Kumano Kodo, thanks in part to the story of Prince Arima.
